Built between 1957 and 1959 thanks to the donation of Giuseppe Guerrieri, the church has become a reference point for the local community, thanks to the “Congregazione Sacra Famiglia di Nazareth di S. Giovanni Battista Piamarta” which also donated an oratory and a youth center still in use today.
The square-shaped building stands out for its modern style and overlooks the square of the same name. Inside, the polygonal sanctuary and the wide space free of columns allow a clear view both to the celebrant and to the faithful. On the sides of the sanctuary, there are two chapels: the one on the right is dedicated to the Madonna del Corallo, protector of sailors, while the one on the left is dedicated to St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, protector of young people. The octagonal dome, topped by a wrought iron cross, also serves as a skylight that floods the environment with light.
The interior walls of the Church of Sacro Cuore are richly decorated with mosaics depicting gospel episodes and images of the Via Crucis, created by the internationally renowned artist Bruno Zenobio. The mosaic, made of glass pastes, stone, marble, and granite, is an art often linked to sacredness, and the mosaics of the Church are a reference to the ancient Ravenna mosaic art of Byzantine origin.
On the 650 square meters of mosaics present inside the church, there are representations of the Basilica of St. Peter, “The day of Assisi,” other figurative and abstract sets, but Zenobio’s mosaic masterpiece is the “Via Crucis,” represented by life-size characters in fourteen scenes, in narrative order, like frames of a movie.
The Church of Sacro Cuore in Roseto degli Abruzzi is a jewel of modern art and devotion, which combines artistic excellence with the deepest spirituality.
